Jack Hunt School Students Set Sail on Unforgettable Tall Ships Voyage
Students from Jack Hunt Secondary School, part of the Peterborough Keys Academies Trust (PKAT), had the incredible opportunity to participate in a four-day immersive sailing experience aboard an 80ft yacht. Following last year's successful voyage on a 72ft Challenger, this year's adventure saw the students explore new horizons as they navigated the waters along the south coast of England.
The adventure was part of the renowned Tall Ships Youth Trust 'Voyage of Exploration.' The event, in partnership with Cross Keys Homes, saw six Year 9 students, four Year 13 students and accompanying staff sail into a journey of self-discovery and team building.
The voyage, which started from Portsmouth and covered the English Channel and Isle of Wight, was designed to teach the students new skills, foster confidence, and build resilience.
Under the supervision of experienced skippers and teachers, Mr Lomas and Miss Humphrey, students learned the fundamentals of sailing, including steering the yacht, sail handling, ropework, and onboard safety.
One of the highlights of the trip was the unique experience of night sailing, where students navigated the dark waters using instruments and their newfound skills. The thrill of working under the stars and the magic of the wind and waves made it an unforgettable moment for the crew. They were also fortunate to witness dolphins swimming alongside the ship, adding to the sense of adventure.
For the more daring participants, there was the challenge of climbing the ship's towering mast. With safety harnesses in place, students scaled the rigging to enjoy breathtaking views of the open sea and coastline from high above the deck.
The voyage was more than just an adventure; it was a valuable educational experience. The students developed practical sailing skills, such as reading nautical charts and operating onboard equipment, while also enhancing their teamwork, communication, and leadership abilities. The sense of camaraderie quickly became second nature, as the students worked together to run the ship, even taking on the task of mooring in various ports.
Mr Lomas, PE teacher and Deputy Head of Year 9, one of the teachers who accompanied the students, commented: “It has been such a privilege to watch our sixth formers lead the younger students. Teamwork, camaraderie, and lots of fun, even if it involved washing dishes!”
Mr Jon Hebblethwaite, Head Teacher of Jack Hunt School said: “We are delighted to have been involved in such an amazing event. We are very proud of all the students who took part, and we extend our thanks to the staff who made this experience possible.”
Claire Higgins, Cross Keys Homes’ Chief Executive said: “We are delighted that the students from Jack Hunt School had such an amazing time on their voyage and gained so much from it. Funding these voyages is such a privilege for us and it is always wonderful to hear back from the young people who have gained so much from their experiences. I know the skills and confidence they have gained will last a lifetime and will hopefully serve them well in the future.”
The 2024 Tall Ships trip not only provided a thrilling adventure for the students but also taught them valuable life skills and created lifelong memories. From night sailing to encountering dolphins, the voyage was a journey of personal growth, teamwork, and exploration, offering the students a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
